BRIGADEIROS

Lori
by Paula Gelly

Âncora 1
Story

Lori, a young woman who accidentally locks herself out of her apartment.
When she has her new set of keys made at her neighborhood locksmith she learns that not only her door was locked, but her entire self.

Impossible to ackowledge them, she represses them ferociously.

A 38 year old woman, attractive and well educated driven by her professional ambitions and the desire to get ahead.
Absolutely self absorbed on her desperate and yet properly covered need to reach her goals, she loses contact with her body, her emotions and her soul.

When she gets her new set of keys on her neighborhood locksmith she encounters disturbing depths within herself.

As in Thomas Mann's book (and Luchino Visconti's film) Death In Venice

Lori, finds a depth in herself when she sees the locksmith she can't sustain.

She sees in him the reflection of eternal beauty, of the ideal she always pursued – something absolutely irresistible –

she sees herself morally disarmed in the face of the perfect image.

“He was more beautiful than words could express, he felt painfully, as so many times before, that language can only praise, but not reproduce, the beauty that touches the senses. (...) And, overflowing with emotion, shaking repeatedly, he secreted the traditional formulation of desire - impossible, absurd, abject, idiotic but sacred, and even in this case honorable: "I love you!"

Thomas Mann – Death in Venice.

This experience of impact and disarm was also defined by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung (26 July 1875 – 6 June 1961) as “Participation Mystique) which denotes a “death of the ego” by an identification with the collective.

Director's Statement

This is a piece that talks about the extremes of our civilization and how it keeps teaching us to violate our inner truth and humanity.

In order to conform to our society, without realizing, we commit strange and yet precise violences to ourselves.

Lori is the product of our civilization.

She represents not only women but every human being who has shut down his or her humanity in order to belong to a brutally competitive society.

Conformism: the seed of any type of fanatical movement.

The financial and political crisis, the aggressive social media and propaganda, the unbearable high prices of major cities, the dictatorship of beauty and youth, the saturation of information - it is all contributing to a desperate robotic and conforming way of life, robbing us of real and simple satisfaction.

Lori is all of us.
